Hey so now that I have finally caught up on my work, I can write a blog entry! Yayay.
Well I think I'm just going to write my goals for this semester.....
1) Get plastic bag recycling started
2) Get a battery recycling box to put at the front desk
3) Start adopt a highway clean up again
4) Have someone else take over the garden for next semester
5) find more community service opportunities
6) get a TAMS group out to the Big Event
So I know the semester has started a little bit rough with a new job and stuff, but I think it'll be a good one. I love my job and the people I have met. Also I'm ready to finish off my senior year with a great semester (:

One Semester Down
I hope everyone had a good semester overall. I know I've had a busy one.
Naturally has accomplished a lot this semester, from the garden to the recycling. The garden looked so great although I think Kent took all the veggies since I'm pretty sure no one had anytime for a dinner during our last few weeks.
I think as we go back next semester, our job will be to rake up everything and think about the new garden. I have been thinking, maybe a junior can run the garden next year to get a head start for next year. Because one of the mistakes from last year is that I didn't get anything from my seniors as to what to do or anything. Basically they threw me in to an exec position. So possibly if a junior takes over the garden, it will position Naturally to become an official club for Fall 2011. I mean every school needs an environmental club right?
Recycling wise McConnell has been doing awesome as always. The only thing is that people keep putting cardboard in a paper bin so I'm thinking I'll add a sign reminding everyone cardboard goes outside.
My Eco Rep project will probably be to add plastic bag recycling bins at the end of every hall. That will probably happen early in the semester.... or maybe after my Feb 3rd deadlines. I will also be looking in to more community service projects and such.
Anyway, I do hope everyone has a wonderful break and happy holidays. (:
I'll see you in January.

Hi Blogger, It's Been A Long Time
So apparently I'm not very good at blogging considering I've got only 2 posts this semester. But on the up side at least I actually have stuff to blog about on this one (:
Here's my update on the garden. It's looking awesome! The plants are so huge, my only issue is planning a dinner that I want to do. I honestly don't have time to do it, nor plan it. So we'll see what happens there. Meanwhile peppers, cabbage, peas, and such are ready to be stolen for anyone who wants them, just don't steal the entire plant please.... But either way it is looking great. It took us about 2 hours to weed considering we hadn't done it in 6 weeks and we had a lack of tools, I think we did alright.
Besides the garden, Naturally has kinda been going on the wayside lately due to the excessive amount of studying and college apps I have been working on for the past few months. Although the wing reps are doing a very nice job of recycling besides the cardboard that belongs outside not in the paper bin.
Eco rep wise, I think things are going pretty alright. I got some posters up on the recycle bins and some flyers with what's recyclable handed out. Tabling at West also went alright. It was kinda quite and I was dangerously close to getting nailed by a ping pong ball, but we ended up chatting and making pinwheels. Speaking of pinwheels, the Campus's Beyond Coal pinwheel event out on the campus green ended up looking awesome! The goal was to spread the idea about getting UNT on 100% renewable energy sometime within 10ish years. As of right now, UNT has not yet made the agreement, but 3 windmills were okayed for the new stadium. On November 11th, the same day the pinwheels were displayed, the board of reagents decided on taking the over $2 million grant to build windmills that will eventually power much of the stadium and athletic center.
Thank you to all the McConnell people who helped make pinwheels at the Hope meeting and my wing meeting. The pinwheels looked awesome on the campus green. I would upload a picture by I just deactivated my phone and forgot to upload before.
The next thing I'm planning on doing is probably putting boxes at the end of every wing to recycle plastic bags. These bags will be taken to people who knit or crochet them in to blankets for the homeless. So look out for those soon. (:
And that's my life as an eco rep for the many weeks that I have not written.

It's October already?
So I'm pretty sure the past few weeks have been the craziest, meaning crazy busy, weeks ever. So sorry I haven't gotten anything written up in a long while.
Oh, but it is worth mentioning that I did successfully complete my week of under 10 minute showers (:
Anyway, a few weeks ago, we had our first Eco Rep meeting. So what do I do as an Eco Rep? Believe me, I didn't know before the meeting either. Basically, I spread sustainable ideas around campus and around my hall. Sounds easy enough, yes? So if you see me tailgating this weekend under a go green or sitting at a table giving away free stuff, know that I am going to be promoting sustainability or something of that sort I'm sure. But for sure it was nice to meet new people and I do look forward to getting to know all the Eco Reps. (:
Meanwhile at McConnell, the garden is looking so good, thanks to those who helped pick the plants, make signs, plant, and water. The peppers are looking so good and so is the lettuce. I will for sure try to get the signs up soon since they are just sitting in my room. I'm thinking maybe I'll throw a dinner for Naturally members soon? I would hate for the veggies to go to waste.
The recycling is going so well too! When I checked the bins last week, they were super full so thanks guys (:
Well I think that's kinda everything I have to say. I've haven't been able to do much lately with all the tests and deadlines. But if anyone has a service idea or sustainable program idea please please let me know, cause that's what I am here for. Hopefully I will have some coming up as soon as I get a chance to take a breather.
Thanks to everyone who have helped me get through this busy time. I will need you for the rest of the semester I am sure so don't go away.
One more thing, if you want to see more about what Eco Reps really do, check this out. And more motivation to look, there's pictures of me and the other Eco Reps up. like what?! So check it.

Let's take it one week at a time
So after accepting this eco rep job along with running my club, they tell me to start blogging about my sustainability work. Basically the assignment was, 1) pick something sustainable that you don't already do and do it for a week 2) blog about it.
I've been just a little bit swamped with work lately so I've been kinda slow about getting my blog stuff up. I know I was supposed to do my sustainable action last week, but in the craziness, I forgot. So starting today, I'm going to take under 10 minute showers. Did you know, you use somewhere between 16 and 20 gallons of water in just a 5 minute shower? I feel like I totally read that in a seventh grade math problem or something and it's just been stuck with me since. I know this is something everyone can do, I mean, don't we all give in to temptation and linger just a little bit longer in the warm showers sometimes? Well no more long showers..... at least for this week.
Since I have yet to complete my week of sustainability, I figure I'll just write a bit on what I've been working on at McConnell lately. The major accomplishment for last week was getting the recycling bin system back up and running for the new semester. TAMS has kept the recycling system going successfully for, I want to say 5ish years now? We put one bin at every wing just for recycling. Every week a volunteer wing representative takes it downstairs and sorts it in to paper, plastic, cardboard, and aluminum. I finally got all 14 wing reps chased down with kinda an understanding as to what to do.... So we'll see how smoothly that runs this week.
Also a bunch of us cleaned out our garden a few weeks back. So this week, we'll be planting our veggies, which is super exciting. So stop by and come see it sometime next week (:
